Moisturizing for Hairless Dogs

Most hairless dogs will require a good moisturizer to prevent dryness and itching.  I recommend using dog-safe products. Avoid using moisturizers designed for humans because dogs lick their skin. There is no guarantee that moisturizers designed for external use on human skin is safe for dogs to ingest.

Moisturizers should always be applied to clean skin, preferably after a bath. Bathing removes dirt and oil, leaving a clean slate to apply products, however, many hairless dogs require daily moisturizing but don’t get daily baths.  On non-bath days you can wipe your pet with a gentle-formula dog wipe before applying moisturizer.  Doing so prevents trapping dirt on your dog’s skin causes dog acne and blackheads. 

Dogs may attempt to roll on furniture and rugs after being moisturized.  To avoid ruined furniture, and to slow the dog from licking, I moisturize sparingly being sure to work it completely into the skin.  My dogs enjoy this rubdown immensely. Before allowing my dogs to escape, I put dog clean pajamas or a shirt on them. This cuts back on the amount of licking they can do and prevents the dog from rolling moisturizer all over the furniture.

Avoid using products that contain lanolin on hairless dogs because it is a common cause of skin allergy in these breeds. If you notice that your dog still seems very itchy, try different/stronger moisturizing products.  As in humans, what works for one may not work for others

Takeaway: Moisturize your pooch with dog-safe products on clean skin.  Avoid lanolin containing products.
